Seasonally variable riverine production in the Venezuelan llanos

چکیده
We examined primary production, respiration, and nutrient dynamics in littoral areas of the mainstem and lagoons of the Cinaruco, a nutrient-poor river in the Venezuelan llanos. Gross primary productivity (GPP) was relatively high, given the poor nutrient conditions in this river. Seasonal variability in net ecosystem production (NEP) was also high, with highest values occurring in the dry season (March– April) when fish biomass and chlorophyll a (both water-column and benthic) levels were greatest (dryseason NEP1⁄4 542 mg C m 2 d , wet-season NEP1⁄4 303 mg C m 2 d ). NEP and algal biomass (measured as chlorophyll a) were higher in lagoons than at river sites, with more pronounced differences between these 2 habitats during the dry season. Strong N limitation was evident. Dissolved inorganic N (DIN) concentrations always were ,2 lM and typically were ,0.5 lM. Molar ratios of DIN:SRP (soluble reactive P) varied little seasonally and were always ,8. As in other Neotropical aquatic systems, water-column productivity was an important source of organic matter and was .23benthic productivity, even in shallow regions of the riverine ecosystem. Low nutrient levels combined with high rates of autochthonous productivity in the littoral zone of this river suggest extremely rapid nutrient cycling rates and support the view that the littoral regions may be important in providing the organic matter that maintains secondary production, consistent with the Riverine Productivity Model and other observations in the Orinoco Basin.

Large ranches as conservation tools in the Venezuelan llanos
Traditionally, conservation efforts have concentrated on protecting plant and animal populations through the establishment of national parks and reserves. These protect only a small proportion of wildlife habitats and, in many countries, increasing their extent is difficult. This is certainly the case in many countries in Latin America, where enforcing wildlife protection laws is also difficult...
متن کاملComposition and Transformation of Dissolved Organic Matter in the Baltic Sea
The processing of terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal shelf seas is an important part of the global carbon cycle, yet, it is still not well understood. One of the largest brackish shelf seas, the Baltic Sea in northern Europe, is characterized by high freshwater input from sub-arctic rivers and limited water exchange with the Atlantic Ocean via the North Sea. We studied the mo...

Bacterioplankton abundance and metabolic characteristics were observed in northern San Francisco Bay, California, during spring and summer 1996 at three sites: Central Bay, Suisun Bay, and the Sacramento River. These sites spanned a salinity gradient from marine to freshwater, and sampling occurred during a period of seasonally declining river flow. The microbial measures included radio-labeled...
متن کاملGeomorphic thresholds in riverine landscapes
1. Rivers are subject to thresholds of several types that define significant changes in processes and morphology and delimit distinctive riverine landscapes and habitats. Thresholds are set by the conditions that govern river channel process and form, amongst which the most important are the flow regime, the quantity and calibre of sediment delivered to the channel, and the topographic setting ...
متن کاملOPEC and Venezuelan oil production: Evidence against a cartel hypothesis
This study revisits the OPEC cartel hypothesis using a case study. A test is conducted to see if Venezuela has its production Granger cause its OPEC quota or whether the OPEC quota for Venezuela Granger causes Venezuelan production. The results show both occur at different times. In the short run, OPEC’s oil production quota for Venezuela Granger causes Venezuelan production. However, shortly a...
